Title:
ROOA, an ancient family of endogenous retrovirus ancestral to the modern ROO family.

Abstract:
ROOA is a family of ancient endogenous retroviruses that were active in the D. melanogaster genome ~2.5 Myr ago. ROOA belongs to the BCDPR superfamily of retroviruses. ROOA_I is ~62% identical to ROO_I, an internal portion of ROO currently active in D. melanogaster. The consensus sequence was reconstructed based on 5 copies of ROOA identified in chromosomes 2 and 4. The gag and env regions are not complete because of a lack of sequence data. ROOA_I copies are 96% identical to the ROOA_I consensus sequence. The reverse transcriptase and endonuclease domains are encoded by the ~4000-bp ORF. It encodes 1351-aa polyprotein (ROOApol, positions 1298-5350).
